From Classroom to Industry Engineer
Transitioning from the classroom to an industry engineer has been the goal of many engineering students.
On May 24, 2025, I had the pleasure of being the guest speaker at a student and young professional-led webinar on the topic from theory to practice.
It was incredible to present to over 70 attendees from over 20 countries.
This all-important and exciting presentation was organized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Power and Energy Society (PES) Student Branch Chapter at the University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka.
In this session, we explored how to transition confidently from the classroom to the control room or a field engineer, turning academic theory into real-world impact.
In my experience, having dealt with many people over a decade in the engineering industry, I realized that engineers pay less attention to non-technical skills.
As such, we discussed some relevant soft skills that play a significant role in our professional development. They are easy on paper, but most difficult for most of us. The reason is that dealing with people is more complicated than dealing with machines. Machines will usually do what we command them to do, but humans, in most cases, do not like being commanded around.
As engineers, it is important to acknowledge that non-technical skills are equally essential to our success and the success of the companies we serve.
Remember to add a “human touch” to all actions we take in all places, including workplaces.
A Mindset from the Classroom to an Field Engineer
At one point in everyone’s career, we know less about what is expected of us.
How do you apply your studies to real industry problems? You are not alone. We have all been there before.
Are you unsure what power and energy industry hiring managers are looking for? Knowing what is relevant to the workplace is 50% of the challenges resolved.
We discussed how to position yourself for success in one of the world’s most dynamic sectors.
This webinar features practical advice, expert insights, and proven strategies. We discuss how to overcome post-graduation uncertainty and thrive in roles such as:
- ✅ Power Systems Engineer
- ✅ Protection and Control Engineer
- ✅ Interconnection Electrical Engineer
- ✅ Renewable Energy Consultant
Whether you’re still studying or already entering the professional world, this webinar is for you. Learn how to equip your mind, bridge the gap, and build a meaningful career in power and energy.

Summary
In summary, one of the biggest concerns that students and early-career professionals have is how to bridge the gap between school knowledge and industry. This concern is legitimate. We should first acknowledge and move on with strategies that will help us prepare even before completing our education.
Entering the real world of the workforce brings challenges such as a lack of job opportunities, uncertainty in career growth, and confusion about which direction to pursue.
Start with an optimistic mindset, write down your top skills and prospective employers, identify some similarities, and design a career plan.
