How Does the PE Licensing Process Work?

A step-by-step overview of the path to becoming a licensed Professional Engineer in the United States.

  • 1

    Earn an Accredited Engineering Degree

Complete a bachelor's or master's from an EAC/ABET-accredited program. International graduates must have credentials evaluated through NCEES Credentials Evaluations.

  • 2

Pass the FE Exam → Become an EIT

Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam administered by NCEES to earn your Engineer in Training (EIT) or Engineer Intern (EI) designation.

  • 3

Accumulate 4 Years of Work Experience

Gain a minimum of four years of progressive professional engineering experience, typically under the supervision of a licensed P.E. The 4 years maybe reduced to 3 years if you have masters degree or 2 years if you have a PhD.

  • 4

    Pass the PE Exam

Register with your state licensing board, then take the PE exam at an approved Pearson VUE test center. The PE Power exam is 80 questions over a 9-hour appointment.

  • 5

    Apply for State Licensure

Each U.S. state/territory has its own licensing board. Submit your application, pay fees, and receive your P.E. license. Use comity to expand licensure across additional states.
