Earning your Professional Engineer (PE) license isn’t just another credential; however, it’s a career-defining transformation that elevates your credibility, earning power, and professional influence.
According to the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) and data from PayScale (2024), licensed Professional Engineers in the United States earn 15–25% higher salaries on average than their non-licensed counterparts. You are talking about a decent six (6) figures.
Moreover, beyond the financial advantage, the license empowers you to stamp and seal engineering designs, lead multimillion-dollar infrastructure projects, and take legal responsibility for work that impacts public health and safety.
Many engineers have testified that obtaining their PE license was the turning point that transformed them from technical specialists into trusted industry leaders.
According to the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES), the benefits of having a PE license are many. This includes “Stamping and Sealing Designs, Bidding for Government Contracts, Owning a Firm, Consulting, Offering Expert witness Testimony, and Advertising Services to the Public”
This is your opportunity to join that elite group, take control of your career trajectory and build a legacy that lasts.
This journey starts with the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination. However, several other factors should be considered when embarking on this professional path. It is a journey and not a sprint.
Brief of my journey.
When I took the FE exams in February 2022 and the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) in June 2022, I had no idea what the entire process would look like.
❌ Failed first attempt for FE in November 2021. It was really a sad moment!
✅ Passed on second try for FE in February 2022.
✅ Passed first time for PE in June 2022.
Waited for 3 years plus 🥹
Delayed gratification 💯.
𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻.
🍀 October 24, 2025, I have my PE licenses for the States of New Jersey (NJ), Illinois (IL), and Pennsylvania (PA).
✅ It is worth noting that there is no single nationwide license that allows you to practice across all the U.S. states. This is different from almost all other countries and may be confusing to potential prospective candidates from other countries.
✅ One other thing you should note is that every U.S. state has different requirements to be licensed. I will provide additional guidance in the upcoming class.
✅ I gained firsthand experience in self-study, passing both the FE and the PE in less than 5 months of focused study without any external online training classes. I, however, support the idea of online training if you have the means.
Doing it alone is possible, but you could make serious mistakes, and it will cost you time, brainpower, and money.
