Why Engineers Fail the FE Exam—and What Successful Candidates Do Differently

Webinar Episode 03

Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam requires more than reading textbooks, memorizing formulas, or solving random practice questions.
Many capable engineers struggle because their FE exam preparation lacks structure, timed practice, progress evaluation, or a clear understanding of their weaker subject areas.
In Episode 03 of the ShaiLearning FE-to-PE Licensure Webinar Series, I explain why engineers fail the FE exam and what successful candidates do differently. The goal isn’t simply to study longer, but to prepare with a clear, measurable strategy.

What You Will Learn

In this webinar, we discussed:

  • Current FE exam pass rates and what the numbers mean
  • Five common reasons candidates fail the FE exam
  • How to interpret an NCEES diagnostic report
  • Six preparation habits successful candidates develop
  • A practical eight-week FE exam study plan
  • How to evaluate your readiness before scheduling the exam
  • Questions and answers about FE exam preparation

Why Some FE Exam Study Plans Fail

One of the most important lessons from this webinar is that studying longer does not always mean studying effectively. Engineers may spend months reviewing materials without completing enough timed practice, analyzing their mistakes, or learning how to find information quickly in the FE Reference Handbook.

A successful FE exam study strategy should combine consistent study, active problem-solving, timed practice, handbook familiarity, and regular progress evaluation. These actions help you identify knowledge gaps and determine whether your preparation is improving.

If you ever took the FE Exam and couldn’t make it on your first or any other attempt, you shouldn’t see it entirely as a failure. However, consider it as feedback and relevant data for your next action.

Therefore, engineers preparing for another attempt should also use their NCEES diagnostic report carefully. NCEES provides this report to unsuccessful examinees to show their relative performance across the major exam topics. It can help you identify weaker areas, but it should not be interpreted as an exact numerical exam score.

Watch the Recorded Videos

To make it easier for most busy engineers or graduating students, I divided the 1-hour video into six (6) parts. I believe this makes it easier to watch in pieces, and you can always come back to continue with the next part.

Part 1: FE Exam Pass Rates Explained

Part 2: Why Candidates Fail the FE Exam

Part 3: How to Pass the FE Exam

Part 4: Week FE Exam Study Plan

Part 5: Are you Ready for the FE Exam

Part 6: Q&A Session - Know your readiness

Build a More Focused FE Exam Strategy

Finally, whether you are taking the FE exam for the first time or preparing for an FE exam retake, this webinar will help you evaluate your current approach and develop a more realistic preparation plan.

Watch the complete Episode 03 webinar here or explore the six shorter videos above to learn about FE exam pass rates, common preparation mistakes, successful candidate habits, the eight-week study roadmap, and the FE readiness assessment.

The objective is simple: understand where you are, identify what needs improvement, and prepare with greater purpose and confidence.
